3-on-3 game play is quite different from standard 5-on-5 play. Teams are small, 9 players (one goalie), and games move very quickly. Don't let this format fool you… this game is an endurance challenge. USA Hockey has been advocating this style of hockey for the past 10 years. Additionally, European hockey programs have used this form of hockey as the foundation of their skills programs. 3-on-3 hockey forces players to play with their teammates. These limitations require players to move faster, react quicker, pass the puck often and learn how to support the play. In short, it helps teach player creativity while sharpening their instincts. The obvious benefit is that all players, regardless of present ability level, improve skills quickly and improve their knowledge of tactics. And the best thing of all… they are doing this while having FUN!
